Two Wilson residents are dead and a third is in critical condition following a head-on collision Monday afternoon.

The wreck happened near the top of a bridge over the CSX railroad tracks in the 4200 block of Ward Boulevard between the former J.C. Harris car dealership at the corner of Raleigh Road and Ward Boulevard and Goldsboro Street.

Officers responded to the wreck at 5:55 p.m., according to Sgt. Eric McInerny, public information officer with the Wilson Police Department.

“As officers arrived on scene, they determined that two passenger vehicles were involved in a head-on collision,” McInerny said.

One of the drivers, Cassandra Lachey Harris, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to McInerny.

A passenger who was riding with Harris, Qwantaveus Tyquis Fleming, 32, was taken to ECU Medical Center in Greenville by Wilson County EMS. Fleming later died from his injuries.

McInerny said the driver of the second car, a 17-year-old boy, also was taken to ECU Medical Center. He was in critical condition on Tuesday.

McInerny said the Wilson Police Department’s Strategic Traffic Enforcement Patrol responded to investigate the wreck.

Firefighters from Wilson Fire/Rescue Services responded to help extricate the victims. A ladder truck remained on scene for hours after the crash to provide assistance with aerial photography for investigators.

The bridge remained closed into the night Monday as the police department’s STEP team conducted its investigation.
