Management is getting activities done with and through people. We should apply management principles to effectively run a business.

Compromise on strategy, not principle. Three of the functional areas of management are as follows:

1. Planning — Defining goals, establishing strategy and developing subplans to coordinate activities.

2. Organizing — Determining what needs to be done, how it will be done and who is to do it.

3. Leading — Directing and motivating all involved parties and resolving conflicts.

I think if you use the above functional areas of management, you can effectively run a business.
