Alvah Monshower Jr. Feb. 27, 1927 -- April 7, 2009 Lt. Col. Alvah C. Monshower Jr., age 82, passed away peacefully Monday, April 7, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Monshower. Alvah leaves behind daughters, Iris Monshower of Wilson and Alyce Singletary and husband, Jack, of Parkton; son, Alvin C. Monshower Jr. and wife, Brenda, of Columbia, Md.; sisters, Louella Chiz and husband, George, of Elk Grove, Ill., and Gracey Culver of Clear Lake, Calif.; brother, Richard Monshower and wife, Jeanie, of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandchildren, Susan Bailey, Paul Moats Jr., Alvah Moats, Tara Simpson, Jeffrey Hoult, Hugh Monshower, Alex Monshower, Katherine Singletary, and Buddy Singletary; 10 great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and one great-great-granddaughter. Mr. Monshower was a graduate of the University of Maryland and received his master's degree from East Carolina University. He entered the U.S. Army at the age of 16, and became a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division. His unit glided into Normandy, where he served as a medic at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bugle, where he received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Alvah was nominated soldier of the year at Fort Bragg and was sent to Washington, where he met and shook hands with President Truman. He also served as a consultant and appeared in the movie "B attleground." He also served in Vietnam 1969-70. Alvah was the Chief of Staff at the Pentagon from 1971-72, and was the Dean of Men at Barton College from 1978-86. He was a member of Winstead United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Thursday, April 9, 2009, from 6-8 p.m. at Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Home. A Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 10, 2009, at Maplewood Cemetery, with the Rev. David Hailey officiating, and military honors to follow. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas-Yelverton at Evergreen Memorial Park, 2704 Nash St. N., Wilson, NC 27896. Myrtle Tugwell Myrtle Lewis Tugwell, 88, of Fountain, wife of the late Alfred Dawson Tugwell, died Tuesday, April 7, at Heritage Hospital, Tarboro. Surviving is one daughter, Hilda Tugwell Webb and husband, Henry Ralph Webb; one grandson, Ralph Dawson Webb and wife, Teresa; one great-grandson, Jason Myrs Webb and wife, Ursula; one great-granddaughter, Dana Erin Webb and fiance, William Bradley Walters; and a sister, Fannie Carr Beamon. She was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Pearl Langley. Visitation will be held tonight from 7-9 p.m. at Farmville Funeral Home in Farmville. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. Robert L. Boone at Queen Anne Cemetery in Fountain. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Webbs Chapel Baptist Church, P.O. Box 339, Macclesfield, NC 27852.
