Heritage softball dominates Sanderson, improves to 5-1

The Heritage High Huskies made easy work of the Sanderson Spartans on a very windy Tuesday, March 14, winning the varsity softball clash 19-0 after just three and a half innings.

“I think everybody came out swinging the bat hard, just in a good mood despite the weather today,” said Huskies head coach Jessica Furlough. “We haven’t been in this kind of climate yet this season, so everybody was in good spirits and just really pumped about getting out here and attacking the ball.”

With the win, the Huskies improved to 5-1 on the season and are flying high with the start of conference play right around the corner.

“I feel like there are definitely things we can improve on, but we really work on getting tons of quality reps… just facing different pitchers and different situations,” Furlough said.

Furlough said cleaning up the defensive side of the ball, communication and not leaving runners on base are some of the focuses for the team.

Senior Trina Van Dyke said the communication on this year’s team is really good.

“I feel like our connection from last year is 10-times better,” Van Dyke said. “We communicate way better. There’s obviously a few things we can work on as a whole, but as long as we’re talking, communicating and being loud on the field and being aggressive, we’ll be great.”

Seniors Jayden Rhodes, Van Dyke and sophomore Victoria Hall all had four RBIs in the win, while 10 different players recorded hits.

“I’m super proud of us because we don’t take for granted any teams,” Van Dyke said. “We come out strong and we finish strong.”

Sophomores Emily Claudio and Lydia Bollinger each pitched two innings, striking out three and four batters, respectively.

The Huskies begin conference play on Tuesday, March 21, at Millbrook.

While not until April 10 and 13, Van Dyke has the team’s rivalry matchup with Wake Forest circled on the calendar.

“Super excited about that,” Van Dyke said.
