BETHEL — SouthWest Edgecombe traveled to North Pitt on Friday at less than full strength for a crucial 2-A Eastern Plains Conference varsity girls basketball matchup.

The Lady Panthers, ranked No. 4 among state 2-A teams by NCPreps.com, showed little mercy in running to a 26-8 first-quarter lead en route to a 68-28 victory, their 19th without a loss.

North Pitt continued its stranglehold on the EPC at 6-0, while the Lady Cougars, without starting point guard Tia Farmer and with sophomore shooting guard Teleyah Owens battling a deep arm bruise, dropped to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in conference games.

Freshman Shayla Ellis led SouthWest with 12 points while junior Ty’Qushia Gainer had 18 points to pace North Pitt.

SouthWest will host EPC foe Washington on Tuesday.
