Fleming fireworks celebrate Fourth

INDEPENDENCE DAY WEEKEND

Fireworks lit up the sky above Fleming Stadium as Wilson marked an early start to Independence Day festivities Saturday night.

The pyrotechnics display followed the Wilson Tobs’ 6-5 win over the Martinsville Mustangs in a 10-inning showdown.

Times journalist Drew C. Wilson and freelance photographer Sheldon Vick were on hand to document the Fourth of July weekend fireworks. Their images from the postgame show appear above.

The Tobs’ fireworks show at Fleming Stadium served as Wilson’s sole skylit Independence Day gathering this year. The Wilson County Fairgrounds canceled its fireworks display after a fatal fire in La Grange last month spread to a storage container where contractor Hale Artificier was storing some commercial pyrotechnics.

With replacements unavailable on short notice, the Lenoir County fire forced the cancellation of several area fireworks displays, including shows planned for Wilson, Stantonsburg and Louisburg.
