Police: 82-year-old shoots his caretaker

MIDDLESEX — Authorities say an elderly man shot his caretaker in the wrist, then chased the victim down a residential street until police and sheriff’s deputies arrived to arrest him.

Ray Cameron

Ray Cameron, 82, shot the victim with a .22-caliber shotgun on Sunday, according to the Middlesex Police Department, which dispatched officers to a 2:43 p.m. shots-fired call.

After firing the gun blast, Cameron chased the victim down South Elm Street to Claude Lewis Road until Middlesex officers and Nash County sheriff’s deputies apprehended him without incident, police said.

Nash County EMS and the Middlesex Fire Department attended to the victim, who was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute between Cameron and his caretaker, noting a history of domestic disturbance calls at Cameron’s home.

Cameron was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and jailed without bond in the Nash County Detention Center pending his arraignment on Monday. Details of Cameron’s first court appearance weren’t available in time for this story.
