Firebirds rout Warriors for 3-1 Big East start

The Southern Nash High baseball team didn’t need long to avenge Tuesday night’s 12-4 loss to 2-A/3-A Big East Conference foe Louisburg, returning the favor with a 12-4 drubbing of the Warriors on the Firebirds’ home field Thursday. 

The 3-A Firebirds, who improved to 3-2 overall on the season and 3-1 in Big East play, jumped out to a 6-2 lead through three innings and plated six more across the fourth and fifth for the run-rule victory over the 2-A Warriors (4-3, 1-3).



Mason Wells led the Firebirds at the plate with a 2-for-3 outing, driving in a run. Blake Strickland went 2 for 4 and drove in three runs. 

Landen Baker turned in a strong outing on the mound, allowing just two unearned runs on six hits while striking out eight. 

Ladybirds suffer 1st defeat in loss to Wildcats

BUNN — The Southern Nash High softball team saw its unbeaten streak to start the season snapped with a 3-1, eight-inning loss at 2-A/3-A Big East Conference foe Bunn on Thursday evening. 

The Ladybirds, who dropped to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in Big East play, took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning before the Wildcats (6-0, 3-0) tied it up in the seventh and plated two in the eighth. 

The Ladybirds put runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the eighth, but couldn’t get a run home, and a bases-loaded double walked it off for the Wildcats in the bottom of the extra inning. 

Carle Beckham and McKenna Batten each reached base three times for the Ladybirds, and Anna Dickinson went 7 1/3 innings in the circle, striking out eight and walking four. 

The Ladybirds will host Fike on Monday.

Ladybirds place 1st in Big East quad meet

The Southern Nash High girls track and field team started its season in fine fashion on Wednesday, scoring 228.5 points to place first at a 2-A/3-A Big East Conference quad meet. 

The Firebirds grabbed five first-place finishes, led by Kayla Baker with two as Miriam Salazar, Chastity Battle and Brianna Wimberly each grabbed one. 

The Ladybirds had a top-eight finisher in every event to win the meet by 55.5 points. 

Southern Nash returns to action Monday at Rocky Mount.

Ladybirds lay it on North Lenoir

LA GRANGE — Charlotte Benson and Amber Patterson each poured in four goals for their Southern Nash girls soccer team as the Ladybirds walloped host North Lenoir 9-0 in a nonconference outing Wednesday.

Emory Gibson had the other goal to go with three assists for the 3-A Ladybirds of the 2-A/3-A Big East Conference as they improved to 4-2. Blair Batchelor and Benson also had an assist each in the blowout.

“The defense played really well and only allowed two shots on goal,” said Southern Nash head coach Robbie Kennedy. “Mercedes Ledbetter, Emily Terry, Erika Landa and Brenda Martinez played well off the bench.”

Southern Nash teams sweep Big East quad

Behind 11 first-place finishes, Southern Nash breezed to the boys team win at Wednesday’s 2-A/3-A Big East Conference quadrangular track and field meet at Southern Nash.

The Ladybirds only took home five firsts but also won the girls meet.

Senior Tralon Mitchell won both the 100-meter and 200 dashes and anchored the Firebirds’ winning 4×100 relay with Thomas Copeland, Mitchell Jones and A.J. Allen.

D.J. Pridgen won the 300 hurdles while Chris Harris ruled the discus and shot put. Jones claimed the triple jump win and Isaac Joyner prevailed in the pole vault.

The Firebirds also won the 4×200, 4×400 and 4×800 relays as they posted 326 points to 159 from runner-up Nash Central, followed by Franklinton (85) and Roanoke Rapids (40). Southern Nash amassed 228.5 points in the girls meet, followed by Franklinton (173), Nash Central (116.5) and Roanoke Rapids (16).

Kayla Baker won the girls triple jump and long jump for the Ladybirds while Brianna Wimberly ruled the 100 hurdles and Miriam Salazar prevailed in the 3,200 run. Chasity Battle took first in the 100 dash.

Louisburg defeats Firebirds 12-4

LOUISBURG — Southern Nash got off to a pretty good start in Tuesday’s 2-A/3-A Big East Conference varsity baseball game at Louisburg, scoring three runs in the top of the first innings. However, the Wildcats trumped that with seven runs in the bottom of the first on the way to a 12-4 win.

The Firebirds (2-2, 2-1 Big East) only managed five hits with freshman Brayden Parker leading the way with a 2-for-3 showing with an RBI.  Senior Landen Baker doubled and drove in a run while senior Blake Strickland was 1 for 2 with two runs scored.

Freshman Luke Faulkner took the mound loss for the Firebirds.
