Vipers strike for win over Vikings

CREEDMOOR — South Granville struggled with Vance County’s air assault and let the Vipers slide to a 27-13 win in the Friday, Oct. 8 Pink-Stop Cancer contest

Tyrek Robinson gave the Vipers great field position by returning the ball to the 50-yard line. Nazir Garrett found Isreal Terry open of the left side of the field for a 37 yard touchdown reception. The extra point was low and no good. 



South Granville gave the ball back to Vance County on a fumble. Fortunately the Vikings were able to hold the Vipers in check and took the ball over on downs.

The Vikings could not generate any offense and a short punt gave Vance County good field position again. Garrett guided his team down the field and Zephaniah Young caught the 5 yard touchdown pass for the Vipers. 

Vance County went to Garrett for the 2-point conversion to give the Vipers a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

Vance County broke the kickoff huddle and tried to catch South Granville sleeping with a squib kick. Omari Taylor covered the bouncing ball for South Granville near mid-field.

South Granville was on the move but a Viper managed to tip a ball away and into the hands of a teammate for an interception. 

South Granville’s defense managed to hold the Vipers in check and force a punt.

The Vikings could not move the ball on the next series. After a punt, the Vipers had the ball at their own 43-yard line.

Garrett once again went to the air finding Terry open for a 34 yard touchdown reception and a 20-0 lead at the half.

South Granville took the second half kickoff and got one first down, but the offense faltered giving the ball back to the Vipers.

Garrett and the Vipers moved the ball into Viking territory but faced a fourth down situation.

Nehemiah Hunter came around the edge, beat his defender and sacked Garret. South Granville took over on downs at the 37-yard line.

Sha’King Allah ripped off a 25 yard run for the Vikings. South Granville would continue to grind away at the Vipers and Khawan Bobbitt finally scored on a 24 yard touchdown run. Grayson Gaul added the extra point for South Granville.

Vance County still had a 20-7 lead, but the Vikings were energized by the touchdown in the third quarter.

Vance County quickly answered with its own touchdown. Garrett connected with Antrel Gibson, who just did get his foot down inside the line for a touchdown. Ian Beck made the extra point and Vance County had a 27-7 lead.

The South Granville offense sputtered again and gave the ball back to Vance County. 

Garrett and the Vipers were trying to put the game away with another pass toward the end zone. Camrynn Johnson picked off the pass for the Vikings.

South Granville turned to Bobbitt and Allah to gain yards on the ground. Peyton Currin connected with Antoine Doyle Jr. for a fourth down conversion. 

The Vikings were marching toward the end zone, but a goal line interception killed the drive.

Vance County could not move the ball and after a terrible punt the Vikings had the ball at the Vipers’ 18-yard line. 

South Granville needed only two plays to get into the end zone. Currin completed a pass to Mayon Myers for a 14 yard gain and Bobbitt did the rest running the ball in from 4 yards out. The extra point was no good.

Vance County had a 27-13 lead with time running out.

The Vikings recovered the onside kick, but failed to move the ball and the Vipers claimed the 27-13 win.

South Granville moved to 2-5 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
