South Granville falls to Person 8-1



CREEDMOOR — South Granville dropped an 8-1 non-conference decision to the Person Rockets. The March 8 contest went scoreless in the first three innings, until Person started to hit the ball.

The Rockets put three runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Kenzley Horne led off with a walk, and Delaney Glover singled in the infield. Taryn Massey hit a ball up the middle into center.



Horne scored and Glover moved to third on the play.

The Vikings managed to knock Glover off the bases when she tried to steal home on a dropped third strike. Abigail Shaeffer threw the ball back to Candace Strombeck at the plate for the tag. Massey moved to third on the play.

With two outs, Allie Carden sent the ball deep over the centerfield fence for a home run to give Person a 3-0 advantage.

Person tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth inning.

With one out, Lindsey Melton doubled for the Rockets. Liberty Jones singled on a bunt and Melton moved to third on the play.

Horne hit into a fielder’s choice that scoreds Melton and took out Jones at second. Horne moved to second on a wild pitch, and Glover hit a line drive to left field to Kylyn Dean. Horne scored on the play. Massey singled to drive in Horne to give Person a 6-0 advantage.

South Granville’s bats began to heat up with Sydney Hockaday hitting a single by the Person shortstop.

Kala Cannady hit a hard ground ball to center field, and Hockaday moved to second.

Shaeffer got a single on a fly ball to the right side of the field. Hockaday moved to third but Cannady was cut down at second. 

Georgia Preddy’s double to center sent Hockaday home and Shaeffer to third. Dean bunted her way on to load the bases but the inning ended with a strikeout. 

Person led 6-1 after five innings, and the Rockets picked up two runs in the top of the sixth to stretch their lead to 8-1.

South Granville statistics: Georgia Preddy (1 for 3, RBI, 2B), Candace Strombeck (1 for 3), Chaleigh Currin (1 for 3), Kylyn Dean (1 for 3), Kala Cannady (1 for 3), Abigail Shaeffer (1 for 3) and Sydney Hockaday (1 for 2).

Preddy worked 6.1 innings in the circle, allowed 10 hits, walked four and struck out seven.

Chaleigh Currin worked two-thirds of an inning and faced three batters.
