GOLDSBORO – Despite being doubled in the hits total, Wilson American Legion Post 13 made a game of Thursday’s Area I interdivisional clash against Wayne County Post 11 before succumbing 6-4.
Wilson, now 2-2, managed just six hits to 12 by Post 11 (4-1) in the game played at Rosewood High but stayed close thanks to solid defense. Post 13, which is playing in the West Division for the first time, made just one error against its longtime East rival. Wayne County committed two errors, leading to two unearned runs.
A.J. Fitzmorris started for Post 13 and took the loss after going 3 2/3 innings. He was followed by Tristan Little and Luke Dilda. Fitzmorris, a senior from Princeton High, allowed three runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two. All three of those runs came in the first two innings and Wilson trailed 3-0 before finally cracking the scoreboard. Bryant Jenkins led off with a single and stole second before scoring on Travis Gamache’s single.
Post 13 added another run when Jordan Wright reached base with two outs, stole second and scored on a Post 11 error.
In the seventh, Gamache doubled in a run before scoring on a double by the next batter, Landen Baker. Those two each had two hits to lead Post 13, which visits Ahoskie Post 102 on Saturday evening. Post 13 will host a tripleheader on Sunday at Fleming Stadium. Wilson faces Wilmington Post 10 at 1 p.m. and Pitt County Post 39 at 7 p.m. Wilmington and Pitt will meet at 4 p.m.
