MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Try as it might, the Barton College women’s basketball team just couldn’t catch up with host Georgia College in the final game of the Peach Belt Conference Carolinas Challenge on Saturday afternoon.

The 74-68 loss was the second of the weekend for the defending Conference Carolinas champion Bulldogs, who were clipped 61-60 on Friday. The Bobcats (2-0) led nearly the entire game, but never by double digits. Barton led 2-0 on Lauren Mingo’s jumper following a Georgia College to start the game but the Bulldogs chased the rest of the way after the Bobcats tied it and took the lead on successive possessions.

Barton cut the margin to one five times, the last coming on a pair of free throws by Lauren Walker, who finished with 18 points, with 3:40 remaining. But the Bobcats reeled off seven straight points to pull away.

Barton struggled offensively, especially in the first half as the Bulldogs made just 11 of 33 (33.3%) from the floor and finished 26 of 69 (37.7%) and just 4 of 17 (23.5%) from 3-point range. Barton’s free-throw shooting was even lacking at 70.6% (12 of 17).

The Bobcats fared slightly better at 25 of 60 from the field, good for 41.7% but Georgia College hit three more 3-pointers in going 7 of 18 (38.9%) while matching Barton’s lackluster line showing at 70.8% (17 of 24).

Leila Copeland came off the bench to pace Barton with 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers. Freshman Erial Owens scored 16 points to go with a team-high nine rebounds, part of Barton’s 37 total.

Alexis Geary’s 17 points led four double-digit scorers for Georgia College, which pulled down 44 rebounds.

Barton plays at St. Augustine’s in Raleigh on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. before hosting Coker in the Bulldogs’ home opener Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
